Environmental groups and some Alaska Native organizations have sued to block drilling. They say the industry has not demonstrated an ability to clean up a spill in ice-choked waters and that basic resources such as deep-water ports, major airports, response equipment or a Coast Guard base are lacking in coastal communities nearest the proposed drilling.
Shell Alaska Vice President Pete Slaiby said in prepared remarks that it's important to make the business case for Alaska and the nation when it comes to potential offshore development.
"First and foremost is putting in place a safe, responsible exploration program," he said. "But if we realize the full potential of the oil and gas resources in the Alaska offshore, generations of Americans will have the opportunity to directly benefit from industries' success."

Let me see...
Lahotan Regional Water Resources Board told me that a little hexavalent chromium in the water in Hinkley wasn't dangerous. They also told me the children in the school situated on the tailings of rare earth minerals mined at Molycorps were just "sickly." I've been told by officials in Barstow, Daggett, Yermo, Loma Linda, Rialto and Fontana that a little perchlorate in the drinking water wasn't harmful. What's a little rocket fuel between friends? Local transportation officials told me that diesel fuel wasn't harmful for breathing and the hundreds of warehouses and thousands of trucks coming to Mira Loma were bringing us all jobs. They all accused me of using "bad science" to stop all the wonderful, sustainable jobs these companies bring to us all.
All these have been proven to be lies by Erin Brockovich, USC and UCLA studies and others. And these are just a few of the ones you might recognize.
We've been fighting to clean up Stringfellow Acid Pits since 1980 when it became one of the first Superfund Sites in the nation and the most polluted place in California. And we are still fighting for the clean up. And, when the percholate plume coming down the Colorado River from Henderson, Nevada meets the perchlorate plumes in the Inland Empire, I'm NOT DRINKING THE WATER! "They" ALWAYS promise sustainable jobs...

No harm in a little unmanageable chemical runoff.
