Banking used to be a pretty solid industry. So many banks have merged with others that it's been almost impossible to track where the papers have gone. Banks selling mortgages to other lending institutions has added another layer of confusion as no one knows for sure who owns these mortgages.

Another thing that I don't see mentioned often is many banks are moving towards having all files kept electronically. The original documents are being destroyed after they are imaged.
