Both see reports that the economy is improving, and they've watched the
unemployment rate in Elkhart County drop from 18.9 percent in March 2009
to 12.2 percent in January. But like so many others across the country,
Sinning and Christophel say the fledgling recovery hasn't trickled down
to them yet.

This is the Indiana County I have lived for 35 years.
Use to be, More work here than one could do!! Only reason for unemployment, is if it was truly a choice!!
That above stigma I feel, I guess, with my 2.5 years of unemployment;
I also feel the numbers, of course, are under reported for unemployment;
and replaced with under-employment.
What use to be thriving industrial parks, are now ghost towns.
MSNBC spent a year here, in '08? Doing a series of stories called: Elkhart Project.
Being we were at the beginning of this "melt down" the highest unemployment in the nation; that label has long been replaced with states such as Nevada.
Ironic, we used to be called: The RV Capital of the World!
But with recession, goes RV, or rather, recreation type industry.
I've hung on here, thinking it would get better? But all that has developed, as all the other states, are low paying, minimum wage, employment abuse by employers; the doing 3 jobs, combined into one, for non living wage.
Sorry to write so much regarding above; I read the above articles in my local paper, & as with MSNBC pulling out from the Elkhart Project, & declaring we were Recovered!
I'm waiting for the sherriff to lock me out of my foreclosed home; then I am leaving this dust bowl, for .......................

Thank you for your post. You made some good points and your post was just the right length. There are many areas of this country that are suffering. It's a shame and almost delusional when the media covers this suffering as recovery.
I'm sorry for all the bas things happening to you and pray we all see better times soon.

It's horrible up there. I don't believe their lies that the unemployment has gotten better at all. It's amazing how much coverage they gave your area acting like they were going to do something about it but, they didn't. Where will you move to?
