BROKEN OVEN
Just when I'm getting into cooking the oven stops working. The stove top works.
Any easy potential fixes?
Thanks in advance

Is it electric? If so, does the broiler work? If so, then the oven heating element burnt out. Just like a bulb does. Easy fix. Remove two screws and replace with new element.
EDIT: Sometimes they pull out like a plug.

If it is electric, remember to UNPLUG it from the electrical outlet.

Thanks for the quick response. I was actually doing a post in the music section about the problem (I know, way off topic) when I saw in the latest topics scroll you had responded.knarf wrote:Is it electric? The broiler does work. It is a GE gas oven. Same fix? If so where is the heating element?

Re: BROKEN OVEN
Nope, not the same fix at all. Does it have electric ignition or a pilot light?
Electric ign. you will hear clicking before it lights. Do you have that?

Re: BROKEN OVEN
Even if it is gas, you still need to make sure that no electricity is running through it when you work on it.

No if he has elec ign. the power has to be on. Works just like a BBQ igniter.

But nothing when you try the oven? If no, then the ignition switch went bad. Sometimes you can lift the bottom tray, and light it with a match if your in a bind for parts money.

Re: BROKEN OVEN
If the burners click then so do the broiler and oven. Sometimes it just may be one click and you don't hear it, but if it is not lighting then you should hear many clicks.

Thanks so much. You mentioned about possibly manually lighting it. Would like to find out if that is an option.knarf wrote:mrgolf wrote:GEknarf wrote:Bill, give me the make and model # so I can see what you have.

There is another number on the oven door PLT083-2
None of these actually say model number

For the final exam, your choice of 2 delicious recipes:
Agedashi-esque Tofu
Ingredients
- 1 (12 ounce) package extra firm tofu
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- oil for frying
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- Cut tofu into 12 cubes. Place cornstarch on a plate
or in a shallow bowl and dredge tofu in it, coating thoroughly. - Heat enough oil so that tofu will be half-way
submerged. Fry tofu in hot oil for 3 to 5 minutes on each side, or
until crispy. Drain on paper towels. - Sprinkle green onions over tofu and drizzle with hoisin sauce. Serve immediately.
OR
Crispy Baked Tofu
Makes 10 to 12 slices
1 pound firm or extra firm tofu, drained and water pressed out
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Olive oil
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the tofu into 1/4″ thick slices.
In a shallow bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, onion
powder, garlic powder and salt, mix well.
Brush a baking sheet with olive oil. Take one tofu slice and brush
the sides and edges with olive oil, place in the breadcrumbs and coat
well. Then place onto the baking sheet. Repeat until all the slices are
coated.
Bake tofu slices for about 20 – 30 minutes until light golden brown
and crispy, turning them over halfway through. Serve with your dipping
sauce of choice – ketchup, bbq sauce, or ranch dressing.

From one of the sites I frequent.
From what I'm getting, you will not be able to light it manually.

It probably needs an oven igniter. Remove oven racks. Remove oven floor. Usually 2 screws towards back. Remove flame spreader if it has one. You can see long tube with holes in sides and igniter with 2 wires from rear. Now try oven. See if igniter glows. If it does but doesn't light within 1 minute, replace igniter.
If it doesn't glow, you need to check for power to igniter. Should be about 100 volts. If not may need ERC, "Electronic Range Control".
