Help To Be Offered Homeless Vets This Week
Estimate: Thousands Of Veterans Homeless In Valley
LAS VEGAS -- Years after serving their country,
many homeless veterans in the Las Vegas valley will receive help from a
veteran-focused intervention program.U.S. Vets is hosting the
annual "Veterans Stand Down" Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the East Las Vegas Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.Nationwide,
an estimated 107,000 veterans are homeless; 4,000 are estimated to live
in Clark County. Last year, the stand down served 477 veterans, the
organization said
"The veterans being served were there for us
when our country called; now they need us," said Shalimar Cabrera, of
the U.S. Vets and chairperson of the event.The Veterans Stand Down offers homeless vets a temporary respite, providing food, clothing, services and long-term solutions to homeless and at-risk veterans.Las
Vegas area nonprofit organizations and veteran service organizations
are participating in the event, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
the American Legion, Nevada State Elks and the VA Medical Center of Southern Nevada.Staff members from the offices of the Nevada Congressional delegation will also participate in the event.
