Is it safe to use free WiFi?
I hope I posted this in the correct thread. I was thinking about going to coffee shops to do some of my job searching just to get out of the house. Is it safe to go to Starbuck's or other places like that and use their free WiFi? Can my laptop be 'hacked'? I tried Googling it, but I'm really not getting a clear answer. Does anyone have any input?

I don't know if its safe or not, Kimmy, but I use the free wifi at Starbucks and McD's sometimes just to get out of the house. I just feel better getting out amongst people

Yes it's safe. They would be the ones to worry if someone was hacking into their system.

I have heard something on the news before about hackers in those public places getting people's passwords and stuff when they log into personal things while they are there but, I don't know how common it is.

Same holds true for wireless home phones. Should always use a land line in these matters.

I wouldn't worry too much about it Kimmy. As long as you are not doing online banking and the like, you should be good.
